Zoon Phonanta

A Dane and two Welshmen walk into Berlin – and start a psych-disco band for stylish danse macabres. That’s more or less how the story of Zoon Phonanta begins – a band that describes itself as the »Nicki Minaj of dungeon synth.« Their atmospheric sound fuses drums and bass with vintage organs and analogue synths. The result? Krautrock-tinged soundtracks for forgotten horror films. Sometimes Zoon Phonanta sound like Can, other times like Swans – only to suddenly drift into space like The Comet Is Coming. Their self-titled debut album was released in September 2024 on the British label Bronze Rat Records (home to acts like Jon Spencer and Gemma Ray), recorded and mixed by Ingo Krauss at the legendary Candy Bomber Studio. The band‘s name is taken from a work by British author, composer, and linguist Anthony Burgess (best known for »A Clockwork Orange«): »Zoon Phonanta« – the talking animal. Or in other words: the human.
