Muzi

Zulu artist Muzi is one of the most exciting and experimental musicians currently emerging from South Africa. Friends of Musicboard Berlin may already be familiar with Muzi – he received a grant from the funding programme back in 2016. Radio-1 and Apple Music legend Zane Lowe has long been a fan – and Berlin is sure to follow after this performance. Muzi blends South African genres like Maskandi and Kwaito with traditional Zulu vocals (Isicathamiya), mixing in Bubblegum pop, and influences from the ’80s and ’90s. Born and raised in the township of Empangeni, north of Durban, he has released five albums – most recently »uMUZI« in 2023 – and has collaborated with artists such as Coldplay, Damon Albarn’s Africa Express, and UK rappers Stormzy and Ghetts. His sound is unmistakable, full of energy, and globally resonant. It’s high time Muzi took the big stage.
